Generally speaking, structured interviews ensure candidates have equal opportunities to provide information and are assessed accurately and consistently.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em><span class=\"underline\">Structured Interview<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>All candidates are asked the same questions in the same order.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>All candidates are evaluated using a common rating scale.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Interviewers are in agreement on acceptable answers.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em><span class=\"underline\">Unstructured Interview<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Candidates may be asked different questions.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>A standardized rating scale is not required.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Interviewers do not need to agree on acceptable answers.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>At first glance, the unstructured interview appears attractive due to its loose framework, discretionary content, and conversational flow. Yet, these same features make this type of interview very subjective, which reduces its accuracy and invites legal challenges.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Research consistently indicates unstructured interviews have little value in predicting job performance.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em><span class=\"underline\">Unstructured interviews typically demonstrate:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Low levels of reliability (rating consistency among interviewers).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Low to moderate levels of validity (the extent to which the assessment method measures what it is intended to measure, e.g., job performance).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>From <\/strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.opm.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>www.opm.gov<\/strong><\/a><strong> (Federal Office of Personnel Management):<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>A structured interview is an assessment method designed to measure job-related competencies of candidates by systematically inquiring about their behavior in past experiences and\/or their proposed behavior in hypothetical situations.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Generally speaking, structured interviews ensure candidates have equal opportunities to provide information and are assessed accurately and consistently.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Structured interviews are popular because they are more personal than other assessment methods.
